Jasper Johns

I thought I’d add a few paintings by Jasper Johns (born in 1930) today. Sometimes categorised as a pop artist, sometimes as neo-Dada, he worked in painting, print-making and Sculpture. Johns worked alongside artists like Robert Rauscheberg, Andy Warhol and Bruce Naumann in the fifties and sixties. His concern with the everyday was central to his philosophy. His influence on the development of ideas about art and his interest in the craft of the medium challenged Abstract Expressionism and paved the way for Minimalism and Pop Art.

“there may or may not be an idea,And the meaning may just be that painting exists” (quote by Jasper Johns).

John’s paintings, to me a pure example of art as philosophy. His work questions the very nature of its own existence and purpose. I think the quote above by the artist himself confirms this notion.

Looking at letterpress type recently has put me in mind of his paintings, so I thought I’d share this with you. I could look at these paintings all day and not get bored. Such amazing technique and intuitive use of materials.
